I appreciate your visits to my blog, Octogenarian. Under "naches," I note on your web page that you show a NYTimes clipping of my son's engagement to a Chinese girl, Susan Peng-Yu Lu, more than 22 years ago. You should know that prior to their subsequent marriage, which occurred in June 1985, Susie converted to Judaism. She and my son were married by a rabbi. They have three sons, all of whom had a briss and all of whom have had or are having a Jewish religious educaton. One has been bar-mitzvahed (and attends Brandeis Univ.), and the middle one is preparing for his bar-mitzvah in May. My Chinese daughter-in-law went to a mikvah as part of her conversion. She prepares the seder each year, lights Hanukkah candles, and lives a more wholesome Jewish life than many born Jewish women. Now that is the genuine naches that I enjoy from my son's marriage.
